Ceiling fan falls on student during Madhyamik exam in South 24 Parganas

A ceiling fan fell on a student’s head during the Madhyamik examination at Maheshtala Vivekananda High School, leaving her critically injured. The incident occurred just 15 minutes after the exam began, triggering panic among students and staff. The injured student, Nandini Makal, from National Education Temple School, Batanagar, was appearing for her exam at Batanagar Shri Ramakrishna Ashram Vivekananda Vidya Mandir, an examination center under Maheshtala Municipality's Ward 28.

Following the accident, Nandini was first rushed to Maheshtala Municipality’s Matri Sadan hospital for treatment. However, as her condition worsened, she was shifted to a hospital in Bhangar for further medical care. Her father, Naveen Makal, expressed shock over the incident. Meanwhile, the sudden collapse of the fan has raised concerns about the safety and maintenance of school infrastructure, with parents questioning the condition of examination halls.

The school authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. Parents and guardians have demanded accountability and a review of safety measures in examination centers. No updates have been provided on Nandini’s current condition, and it remains unclear if an investigation will be conducted into the maintenance of the school building.
